Cal Kestis' lightsaber

Cal Kestis' lightsaber

First seen in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the main character Cal Kestis is equipped with a special lightsaber. Played by Cameron Monaghan, the Padawan was one of the survivors of Darth Sidious's Order 66, and followed the teachings of his Jedi master: Jaro Tapal.

He was shot by clones, but before dying, he gave his lightsaber, which had become a single-bladed saber, to Cal Kestis. Cal Kestis brandished this weapon at the very start of the game against a Confessor, the Second Sister.

Before this one, the hero had another lightsaber that's easy to forget. But that's not all, there are other incredible anecdotes about Cal Kestis' lightsaber. Let's review everything there is to know about this saber, so that it no longer holds any secrets for you.

In which media does Cal Kestis' lightsaber appear?

For the time being, Cal Kestis' lightsaber has only appeared in works where its owner was present, i.e. in video games. Both are developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (video game)

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is the very first game to feature the Cal Kestis lightsaber. The character is a member of the Ironmongers' Guild, where he meets and seems to like Prauf Boudey. However, Prauf is pierced by a double rotating lightsaber during an inspection by two Confessors accompanied by Stormtroopers. It was at this point that Cal Kestis brandished his lightsaber for the very first time against the Second Sister. He only had time to deliver a few blows before fleeing with the help of a ship named Stinger Mantis. On board, he met two new allies: Greez Dritus (the captain) and Cere Junda (a former Jedi). Later, he also met Merrin, a sister of the night.

For this second opus, released in April 2023, we have the chance to once again experience the adventures of Cal Kestis and BD-1 (the little 2-legged droid). In this game, which opens with the appearance of Senator Sejan, Cal is once again accompanied by that same lightsaber. He faces new enemies such as Dagan Gera, Rayvis, Bode Akuna and Drya Thornne. In fact, after defeating Drya Thornne, Cal Kestis can retrieve his transmitter to transform his lightsaber into a cross-guard saber like Kylo Ren's. Our protagonist also battles opponents he has already encountered in Fallen Order. Among them is the Ninth Sister, a former Jedi named Masana Tide.

Appearance of Cal Kestis' lightsaber

The hilt of Cal Kestis' lightsaber is predominantly metallic gray, with a black handle. What really sets this saber apart from the others is its atypical two-part emitter. As for the pommel, depending on when you see it in the Cal Kestis epic, you'll see it damaged for a while. Overall, the handle is longer than most lightsabers.

As far as the blade is concerned, the Kyber crystal of Cal Kestis' lightsaber is blue from a canon point of view, due to the cinematics and promotional images. But it's also possible to see the saber with a purple, green, orange and even red blade by modifying it in the games. On a workbench, you can also customize other accumulated lightsaber parts, such as the transmitter.

Did Cal Kestis have a first lightsaber before this one?

Indeed, Cal Kestis had his first lightsaber when he was apprenticing with Jaro Tapal, before his mentor gave him his own. It's a relatively basic saber with a brown headband and flared emitter, like Luke Skywalker's and Obi-Wan's lightsabers. Its plasma blade is blue, like the second lightsaber Cal Kestis had. Its plasma blade is blue, like the second lightsaber he wields. During the Order 66 attack on Jaro Tapal and Cal Kestis, the Padawan lost his lightsaber in the ship, which then exploded...

How did Cal Kestis transform his lightsaber into a double blade?

On the planet Dathomir, Cal Kestis has visions of Jaro Tapal. These visions torment him, causing his Kyber crystal to break. On Ilum, he decides to build a new lightsaber before joining the Jedi Temple. Inspired by the design of his master's double lightsaber, Cal Kestis in turn conceived a double-bladed saber. One end is Jaro Tapal's saber, the other Cere Junda's old lightsaber. The two Kyber crystals are in fact a single crystal he recovered but which has broken in two.

Like Ahsoka and her white sabers, Cal Kestis can fight with two lightsabers at once by separating the 2 parts of his double saber. Or, like Maul's double saber, he can keep them together and activate only one of the blades.

What are Cal Kestis' most memorable lightsaber battles?

Cal Kestis versus the second sister

This Inquisitor had once been Cere Junda's apprentice, and was called Trilla Suduri. The second sister was the first opponent to see Cal Kestis light his lightsaber in Fallen Order. She stalks him throughout the game, only to be defeated by Cal at the end, despite having a double-bladed rotating lightsaber. However, it's Darth Vader who shoots her next.

Cal Kestis versus Dagan Gera

Dagan Gera was a Jedi Master of the High Republic whom we meet in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Cal Kestis makes the mistake of waking him from his long sleep, and gradually realizes that he's no ordinary Jedi... Indeed, Dagan Gera bleeds his crystal, triggering a first battle. It was during their second duel that Dagan Gera met his death at the hands of Cal Kestis, who took on the appearance of Santari Khri, the former Jedi's friend.

Cal Kestis versus Bode Akuna

Right from the start of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Bode Akuna is presented as a true ally on whom Cal Kestis can rely. In reality, he's a traitor who's infiltrated to keep his daughter safe. We also learn that he was once a Jedi. His battle with Cal Kestis and his lightsaber is the very last in the game, and ends in Cal's victory.

Cal Kestis versus Darth Vader

Finally, Cal Kestis also confronts the notorious Sith Lord Darth Vader at the end of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, after he slays the second sister. He is accompanied by Cere Junda as he confronts the Sith, who is far too powerful. The game's scenario thus invites Cal Kestis to flee from Vader before concluding... Seeing Vader with his lightsaber was a big surprise for fans of the license.

Cal Kestis' lightsaber has deflected many a blaster shot, and has seen many a journey in its owner's hands. In fact, we may well see it again in the future, in games and even in films and TV series.

As you've seen, the games always offer hidden secrets around powerful artifacts. These include the Cal Kestis weapon, the Boone Kestis lightsaber and the Eno Cordova Holocron. The Star Wars universe created by George Lucas is big enough to afford this kind of hidden bonus.

If you want to join the Jedi Order and fight the Empire, you need a quality lightsaber. We recommend you take a look at all our realistic lightsabers from the menu on this site.
