Count Dooku's curved lightsaber (Darth Tyranus)

Count Dooku's curved lightsaber

Count Dooku, played by actor Christopher Lee, was once a Jedi Master. He was taught by Master Yoda, who wanted to make him his Padawan in order to contain his disturbing urge to fight. Then Yoda's fears about Doku began to manifest themselves...

After Qui-Gon Jinn's death, he turned to the dark side, becoming apprentice to the Sith Lord Darth Sidious (Palpatine). He was given the title Count of Serenno and was also known as Darth Tyranus. He wielded a curved red-bladed lightsaber unlike any other. This weapon enabled him to take on powerful adversaries.

In this article, we'll take a closer look at everything to do with Darth Tyranus' curved lightsaber. Count Dooku was an important figure in the Clone Wars, and was involved in some incredible duels. Let's take a look at the history of this strangely-shaped lightsaber.

Appearance of Count Dooku's lightsaber

Count Dooku's lightsaber has a 35.5 cm curved hilt. It is predominantly silver with black accents. The pommel is wide and sits just below a red trigger. At the other end is an emitter with a kind of horn that acts as a blade guard.

The plasma blade is red thanks to the scarlet Kyber crystal given to Count Dooku by Darth Sidious. So Dooku didn't need to perform a bleeding ritual like Darth Vader did to create his red lightsaber.

In the end, the distinctive feature of Count Dooku's lightsaber lies in the curved shape of the hilt. This choice stems in part from Christopher Lee's fondness for fencing. That's why the handle is curved like a fencing sword. This gives him a firmer grip to perform the movements associated with his form of lightsaber combat.

What form of lightsaber combat does Count Dooku use?

Count Dooku uses Form II: Makashi in his lightsaber battles. This is a one-handed form that is formidable against other lightsaber wielders. This fighting style relies on dexterity and fast, clean, precise strikes. The movements are long and elegant, a perfect match for Count Dooku given his connection with fencing. In Form II: Makashi, Dooku's lightsaber is a perfect fit, as the curved hilt provides a secure grip for precise gestures. This creates unpredictable attack angles that are difficult for enemies to parry when faced with a one-handed lightsaber.

What are Count Dooku's best lightsaber battles?

Count Dooku versus Master Yoda

At the end of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (Episode II), a duel takes place between Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker, accompanied by his master Kenobi with his blue lightsaber, on Geonosis. However, the two Jedi are quickly overpowered. The young Skywalker is knocked down from the start by Darth Tyranus' lightning bolts. He then loses part of his arm to Dooku's lightsaber. In the end, Count Dooku easily defeats them.

Following this, Master Yoda appears to offer us an exceptional battle against Count Dooku. In the midst of a duel with Yoda's green lightsaber, Dooku uses the force to endanger both Jedi. This forces the fight to be interrupted so that Yoda can come to their aid. Count Dooku took advantage of the situation to flee in a spaceship to face his former mentor. The fight was relatively short but intense, given the power of the two warriors, formerly master and pupil.

Count Dooku versus Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi

At the start of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (Episode III), lightsaber-wielding Jedi Anakin and his master Obi-Wan have a chance for revenge against Count Dooku on Grievous' ship. This time, it's Obi-Wan who is brought down first by Count Dooku. Anakin Skywalker then single-handedly defeats Count Dooku, cutting off both his hands in one fell swoop and recovering his lightsaber. During the fight, Chancellor Palpatine, later revealed to be Darth Sidious, watches on. As Anakin faces Dooku with both sabers in his hands, Palpatine urges him to execute Count Dooku and turn him to the dark side. After some hesitation, the young Jedi finally does so, making this Count Dooku's last duel...

Count Dooku versus Asajj Ventress and Savage Opress

In episode 4 of season 3 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Count Dooku faces off against his apprentices: Asajj Ventress and Savage Opress, Darth Maul's brother who also has a double-bladed lightsaber. This rebellion is organized by Asajj Ventress, who receives help from the Sisters of the Night to take revenge on Count Dooku. The two Sith apprentices are separated during the duel, Savage Opress fighting Anakin and Obi-Wan (who have just arrived) while Asajj Ventress continues against Count Dooku. Just as Dooku was about to finish off Asajj Ventress, she found a way to escape at the last moment, preventing the fight from coming to an end.

Are there any characters other than Count Dooku with a curved lightsaber?

Indeed, there are characters other than Count Dooku who possess a curved lightsaber. Asajj Ventress, Count Dooku's pupil, has 2 lightsabers with curved handles. She can also connect them with the pommel to create a double lightsaber. Then there's Ahsoka Tano, who had two white lightsabers with curved handles, including a Shoto. It was these curved sabers that enabled her to stand up to certain Inquisitors.

This Sith lightsaber has had many powerful enemies to battle. It is assumed that Count Dooku was the third most powerful Star Wars character at one time, due to the fact that the first and second were both his masters.

We hope to see Count Dooku's lightsaber again in the future, whether in flashbacks or in dedicated series. Star Wars Tales Of The Jedi, in particular, gave us the chance to see Dooku again with his old curved blue lightsaber. Fans are clearly keen to know more about this character who turned to the dark side...
