Fascinating to Star Wars fans, the Darksaber is special for many reasons. Whether it's its unusual design, the noises it makes or the difficulty in obtaining it: the darkaber is clearly different. After appearing in 2 animated series, a comic book and then in The Mandalorian, the weapon has not gone unnoticed. It also brings its share of questions...
Just as eager as you are to learn more, we have gathered as much information as possible to help you discover some of the secrets. The famous Darksaber is now ready to tell you exactly what you want to know.

It is necessary to start with a description of the one that purists like to call "Darksaber". You will see how original this lightsaber is in its design, its sound effects and other unusual features.
First of all, the sword has a flat blade curved at one point, reminiscent of a katana. It is shorter than a traditional lightsaber, but not Shoto. In contrast to the fact that it contains dark energy and is black, the blade emits a white aura.
Just like the blade, the grey handle of the Mandalorian lightsaber has a shape that is absolutely unprecedented in the Star Wars universe. It is not cylindrical but rectangular and relatively geometrical as you can see from the straight lines that make it up. On the upper part of the handle, there is a guard to protect the hands from attacks and a slot containing the emitter of the blade.
The sounds of the Darksaber are more strident than what we are used to in the saga. Secondly, there is a very interesting point about the sound of the Mandalorian saber: the more emotionally involved its wielder is, the more "electric" sound effects the weapon produces.

You thought that the sword of the Mandalore people had already revealed all its strange characteristics? Think again! It also absorbs part of the light of the surrounding elements. This makes its dark side even more meaningful... The black weapon can also draw the blade of another normal lightsaber towards it. Could this be because the crystal inside can conduct the energy of the wielder's force? That would be very likely.
As required by Mandalorian custom, only a person who can defeat the current owner can be designated as the owner of the Darksaber. If the transfer is not made under these conditions, the purchaser is considered illegitimate. Once again holding to their ancestral values, the blade has been made to be unable to pass through beskar (an extremely strong Mandalorian iron).
Although the Darksaber is mysterious in many ways, its origin is not unknown. In the animated series Star Wars Rebels, we are given a passage (Season 3, Episode 15) explaining who created the weapon and part of its past.
"Legend has it that it was made over a thousand years ago by Tarre Vizsla, the very first Mandalorian to be admitted to the Jedi Order. After his death, the Jedi kept the sword in their temple until members of House Vizsla surreptitiously seized it. They used the sword to unite their people and strike down those who opposed them. At one time, they ruled over all of Mandalore with this sword. This weapon is a very important symbol for this house and is respected by all other clans"

The origins of the Darksaber lie with a Mandalorian turned Jedi named Tarre Vizsla. Because of his place in the Jedi Order and the fact that he was also the creator of the fabulous saber, there is no doubt that this character is no ordinary person.
As we mentioned earlier, the weapon is acquired by defeating the one who wielded it until then. This alone puts us in a position to understand the figure of this color. Indeed, the black blade suggests a personality of leader and dominant for the one who will have earned it in combat.
The idea of a leader being reinforced by the fact that this lightsaber is the only one in the Star Wars canon and that it is by its origins, from a people of warriors (also unique). Knowing that only the Mandalorian saber has this blade, the color black for a lightsaber is also and above all a symbol for the Mandalorians. It is even more so for House Vizsla, which feels itself to be the most concerned political faction.
The popularity of the Black Sword has been fueled by its appearance in no less than 3 different series (available on Disney+) and 1 comic book. They have each contributed to the story of this coveted artifact.
It is in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars that the famous Darksaber will make its first appearance, more exactly in Episode 12: The Mandalore Conspiracy, during Season 2. At that moment, the mythical weapon will be brandished by Pre Vizsla who will use it to fight against Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber.
CThis will not prevent the Jedi from fleeing from the short duel that he seemed to dominate. Later, we will see the Darksaber against Ahsoka Tano and then against Savage Opress (Darth Maul's brother) in a mock battle. Finally, it will be Darth Maul's lightsaber itself that will confront the Darksaber held by Pre Vizsla. The Sith wins the battle and is designated the rightful owner of the weapon.
After Clone Wars, some characters did not have the chance to see their development come to fruition. In order to remedy this, other side works such as this one have allowed us to know more about the future of the forgotten protagonists.
In this case, the comic focuses on the former Sith Lord Darth Maul who wishes to take revenge on his past enemies. To do so, he will be the leader of the Mandalorian Death Watch, once again equipped with the black saber. The 4-volume series will feature the Zabrak, but also other great figures such as Darth Sidious, Count Dooku, General Grievous and even Tazlin, Maul's mother.
During season 3 of Rebels, we have the chance to see the Darksaber again. Indeed, Maul had kept it in a safe place where he put many other rare objects. He will be at that time accompanied by Ezra Bridger, young hero of the TV series. Shortly thereafter, the saber will fall into the hands of the rebels and the origin of the weapon will be revealed.
As a Mandalorian fighting for good, Sabine Wren is encouraged by her allies to wield the blacksword. With the help of a tough apprenticeship led by Kanan Jarrus, she eventually succeeded. Then, it's Gar Saxon's turn to acquire the Darksaber during a quick burst of treachery. Finally, the weapon will be seen in action at the beginning of season 4 in an epic battle involving Sabine (with the saber again), her crew and the Wren clan against stormtroopers.
First of all, you should know that The Mandalorian is entirely centered on a Mandalorian protagonist. And as you may have guessed, this people is the most related to the weapon of all. At the time of writing, the series is not finished, but we can guess that the Darksaber is at the heart of the plot. First in the possession of the antagonist Moff Gideon and then of Din Djarin, the hero of the story, the object has passed through the hands of the most important individuals.
He first appeared in Chapter 8: Redemption in Season 1 and has been appearing more and more since. One thing is for sure: if you're looking for a TV series in which the Darksaber is (and will be) most prominent, The Mandalorian is the one for you.
The weapon being exceptional and very powerful, many characters tried to get it. Knowing that you have to beat its owner to get it, it is not an easy task... Let's see which characters got the Darksaber.
He was the first Mandalorian to become a Jedi and the creator of the Darksaber a thousand years ago before the Clone Wars. Following his death, the item was kept in the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant before being stolen by House Vizsla. Tarre Vizsla left an incredible legacy to the people of Mandalore: the Darksaber.
Descendant of House Vizsla, this character leads the Death Watch group with Maul. Equipped with the Darksaber, he fights to re-establish the barbaric Mandalorian customs that emphasize combat. He blames the New Mandalorians for becoming too pacifist and denying their origins.
Despite his alliance with Pre Vizsla, Maul decides to confront him. He won the duel and at the same time the Darksaber. Shortly thereafter, the fallen Sith fought with his brother against Darth Sidious, who had been his mentor. Savage Opress lost his life and Maul suffered a crushing defeat using the black saber. He will brandish it several other times in Darth Maul - The Son of Dathomir and then he will hide it at the Sisters of the Night.
In Rebels, Kanan Jarrus will have the Darksaber in his possession and will introduce it to Fenn Rau to learn more about it. He will understand its true potential and the obvious connection the weapon has with the Mandalorians. For this reason, he will offer to teach Sabine how to use the sword properly.
Of the characters on the list, the Mandalorian Fenn Rau is the one who will have held the black sword for the least time. He will only use it long enough to tell Kanan Jarrus what he knows. Also, he will mention that if Sabine had the weapon with her, it would be a real asset to bring House Vizsla back together.
Sabine is an expatriate Mandalorian who belonged to the Wren clan. At first, she refused to wield the Darksaber because of all the problems it had caused. She eventually agreed to be accompanied by Kanan and Ezra on Atollon to get a good grasp of the sword and to follow the path that seemed to be laid out for her.
On the snowy planet Krownest, Sabine and her allies are forced to lay down their weapons. Commander Gar Saxon takes the opportunity to seize the Darksaber to use against Sabine. Sabine gains the upper hand and recovers the lightsaber. Gar Saxon attempts to shoot the Mandalorian in the back, but her mother Ursa Wren only just executes him.
EIn view of Bo-Katan's engagement, Sabine will assert that the saber is rightfully hers. She will accept and then become the leader of Mandalore. The Mandalorian series suggests that while Bo-Katan was in that position, the people she led had a dark past. In particular, they suffered the Great Purge, an event that caused the Mandalorians to live in fear.
Governor Gideon is enemy number one in The Mandalorian, he is also the first one to reveal the weapon on Nevarro. For now, no one knows how the Darksaber got from Bo-Katan to Gideon. Played by Giancarlo Esposito, the antagonist would have himself greatly participated in the implementation of the purge. The darkness of his personality is matched only by the color of the blade he is so fond of.
Also called "Mando", Din Djarin is the main character of The Mandalorian series. At the end of season 2, he will do anything to free his comrade Grogu (Baby Yoda to his friends) and this will lead him to duel with Gideon who fights with the Darksaber. Played through the actor Pedro Pascal, Din will dominate his opponent and will become the legitimate owner of the weapon without being aware of it.
The Darksaber has been the source of a lot of conflict in the Star Wars universe. Many people have touched it but few have managed to keep it for long. When you know its interesting properties, it is normal to see that everyone wants to get hold of it.
Even so, we still don't know everything about the weapon. We can count on Lucasfilm to produce a season 3 for The Mandalorian to offer more information about the black sword. One thing is for sure, the artifact will still be subject to other obscure stories. Let's hope Mando doesn't bring all the evils of the galaxy upon himself by possessing this lightsaber...
