Obi-Wan Kenobi's Lightsabers

Obi-Wan Kenobi's Lightsaber

Contrary to the popular belief that each Star Wars character has had only one lightsaber, some escape the rule. This is notably the case of Obi-Wan Kenobi who crossed the blade of his 3 lightsabers with several of his enemies like Darth Vader, Asajj Ventress or Count Dooku for example. In any case, changing equipment has not made him any less of a hero.

The perilous situations Obi-Wan had to face led him to have to rebuild his weapon more than once. The loss of his saber led him to recreate one twice to avoid finding himself empty-handed against his opponents.

We've explored the four corners of the galaxy to trace the history of Obi-Wan's lightsabers. With one of the series' protagonists having a strong connection to Obi-Wan, you'll find that some legacies are passed down through the Lightsaber. Get ready to discover (or rediscover) this Jedi's past and the lightsabers that made him a winner in many battles.

Obi-Wan's First Lightsaber

Obi-Wan's first lightsaber and Qui-Gon Jinn's lightsaber

Like the other two, this lightsaber built by Obi-Wan Kenobi and first appeared in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace has a blue plasma blade. This is a symbol of seriousness and courage. Concerning the hilt, we can see quite quickly that it is similar to that of his master Qui-Gon Jinn. This is not a coincidence, if Obi-Wan was inspired by the handle that his mentor had built, it was to honor him when he was a Padawan. This is a Jedi tradition that shows the apprentice's deep respect for his master who guides him.

It is noticeable that he has retained the same gray and black hilt from Qui-Gon Jinn's weapon. However, Obi-Wan seems to have made a thicker and more advanced saber by looking at the additional features. The presence of a control knob to act on the intensity and length of the blade as well as a spare energy cell in the form of a sphere are proof of this (among others).

It should also be noted that during the time Obi-Wan wielded his first lightsaber, it was in the IV Ataru form. This is one of the primordial forms considered to be the Way of Aggression (or Way of the Falcon). It relies on the sequence of movements and speed to deliver highly offensive and repeated blows.

There are many jumps and acrobatic movements of all kinds. However, mastering this form requires a lot of endurance. It would seem that this did not pose a problem for Obi-Wan.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber battle

On the other hand, there is a problem that Obi-Wan encountered with this lightsaber. Indeed, during the Naboo Blockade, he and Qui-Gon Jinn went on a mission and everything did not go as planned... It was while trying to dodge battle droids that our dear Jedi was forced to camouflage himself in a pool of water. Then, as he emerged from the water, he realized that his lightsaber was temporarily unable to function. After that, he vowed to fix this problem for the future of his combat equipment.

Although Obi-Wan Kenobi fought several times with his lightsaber during the first film, there is one duel that will be the last for this weapon. Indeed, when Darth Maul under the orders of Palpatine fights against Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan, he kills the Jedi master and then sends the Padawan's lightsaber into an abyssal hole on Naboo. Fortunately for him, he will retrieve his mentor's lightsaber through the power of the force to deliver a death blow to the Sith and defeat Darth Maul's dual lightsaber.

Obi-Wan's Second Lightsaber

Obi-Wan's second lightsaber (still blue) has a similar look to the previous one to extend the mark of respect he showed to Qui-Gon Jinn. This again reflects the dedication and commitment Obi-Wan Kenobi has always shown to his master. The design is so similar to the previous one that some theories claimed the Jedi had retrieved the discarded weapon on Naboo.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's second lightsaber

We will learn in the Obi-Wan & Anakin comic book that its initial use was during the mission on Carnelion IV, 3 years after having lost his original lightsaber. In the first trilogy, the lightsaber is wielded in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. At that time, Obi-Wan has become a Jedi Knight and has recently taken Anakin Skywalker as a student..

Obi-Wan & Anakin Comics

This time, Obi-Wan Kenobi will abandon the IV Ataru form to give way to the III Soresu form. This defensive fighting style is based primarily on the execution of parries. Some see this form as an expression of a peaceful dueling style. Obi-Wan chose this form because he believed that the protective aspect of this form was what his master needed to avoid being pierced by Darth Maul.

When Obi-Wan built this lightsaber, he learned from his previous mistakes and adjusted the weapon's waterproof aspect. This was confirmed when he fought Jango Fett on the planet Kamino. As the fight raged in the rain and the lightsaber fell into puddles, it would have been unusable. However, this is not the case when Obi-Wan sees Jango Fett fleeing in the ship as he pulls out the beam of his lightsaber without difficulty. This nod to the previous episode proves that the Jedi Obi-Wan has been able to improve and fill in the gaps in the weapon with additional options.

Obi-Wan versus Jango Fett

Like his first lightsaber, he will lose it to an antagonist before the battle on the planet Geonosis. This time it was Count Dooku who commandeered Obi-Wan's lightsaber after capturing him. The relic was never returned to the Jedi Knight... Unable to fight naked, the Jedi Nicanas Tassu will pass a replacement lightsaber to Obi-Wan so that he can participate in the beginning of the Clone Wars.

Obi-Wan's Third Lightsaber

So Obi-Wan Kenobi set out to make one last lightsaber with a blue Kyber crystal once again. By this time, he had already become a Jedi Master. The ultimate weapon will first appear in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and will intrigue audiences with its novel appearance.

Obi-Wan Kenobi's third lightsaber

The Jedi we know finally turned the page and moved on, making a lightsaber that this time didn't look like Qui-Gon Jinn's. The hilt is notched and is followed by a thinner golden part that widens before giving way to a silver tip: the emitter of the luminous lightsaber. One of the most popular fights with this last weapon is the one where he confronted the lightsaber of Anakin Skywalker, his former apprentice. The duel takes place on Mustafar, where lava and offensive blows are unleashed...

Obi-Wan's final saber will have been wielded during his 19 years on the planet Tatooine until he is shot by the lightsaber of the Sith Lord Darth Vader... The latter will take it with him to Vjun and place it in the Castle of Bast that he had built. The lightsaber of Ben Kenobi being arranged by Vader as a trophy inside the palace.

Obi-Wan versus General Grievous

Another mythical scene in which Obi-Wan was able to prove the power of this weapon is none other than his confrontation where he resisted alone against the 4 lightsabers of General Grievous. We can also note that this is the only saber that has been in the hands of both actors Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor.

Finally, Obi-Wan's Padawan, Luke Skywalker, was inspired by his master's last model to build his second green lightsaber. Just as Obi-Wan had done to honor the tutor who once trained him. The legacy continues, and the Jedi traditions continue from generation to generation...

If you've had a soft spot for Obi-Wan's lightsabers, we recommend our Legendary OBI-K model. As you can see, this one was inspired by the design of Obi-Wan's first and second lightsabers. It will embellish your collection and satisfy you if you are looking for a fictional weapon that is in the image of Master Kenobi :
